A variety of treks are possible, from day strolls through the hills to jungle expeditions. Some of the most exciting treks delve deep into the jungles and mountains of the vast Virachey National Park. Others skirt through the hills of tribal territory and involve sleeping in local hill tribe villages. It is also possible to trek to waterfalls, to sacred religious sites and to the remains of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. For more detailed info on trekking in Ratanakiri, go to Trekking.
Combine trekking with an elephant ride or just enjoy the sights from up high on an elephant-back trek through the hills.

Yak Lom Crater Lake
This crystal clear volcanic crater lake located 15 minutes from Ban Lung offers the perfect afternoon swim. It is a sight not to be missed. The lake is surrounded by jungle and located close to hill tribe villages. There is a scenic path looping completely around the lake that is great for a short hike (2.5 km).
The largest and most dense National Park in Cambodia, most visitors to Ratanakiri never set foot here because it is so remote. The park offers great trekking, mountains, streams and waterfalls for those who are interested in a serious trek.
Numerous waterfalls are located around Ratanakiri, many fairly close to Banlung. Many waterfalls can be reached by car or motorbike from town. Some treks visit waterfalls.
Ratanakiri Province is the home to many different tribes, most of which live in isolated jungle locations much the way they have in the past. Treks can be taken through tribal areas and it is possible to socialize and stay with some tribes.
Wild-west type towns spring up in the jungle overnight as new ores are discovered. Miners risk everything to strike it rich. These are the places to visit to find gemstone bargains and amaze at what depths men will go to find a stone.
Getting to Ratanakiri
The provincial capital, Banlung, can be reached by road from Phnom Penh or Siem Reap via Kompong Cham and Kratie. Eight hours from Phnom Penh and 10 hours from Siem Reap, the trip can be done with a stopover in Kratie, the halfway point.
It is also possible to combine travel to Ratanakiri with a Mekong River Trip, visiting the rare Mekong River Dolphins north of Kratie or Stung Treng, the flooded forests north of Stung Treng and the Silk Islands north of Phnom Penh. Consider a 2-day, 3-day or 4-day trip connnecting Ratanakiri to Phnom Penh, Siem Reap or Laos (4000 Islands).
